PATCHWORK QUILT

Different prints emulate patchwork.

Matching patches of different fabrics may seem like a lot of work, especially for decorating purposes. The fear of excess inhibits even the most daring concepts. However, Patchwork – which consists of sewing together pieces of fabric – has proven to be increasingly popular, not only with fabrics.

There are pieces of furniture on the market that emulate the technique, such as the Carbono sofa, created by graphic artist, scenographer and plastic artists Mutza. It features cedar legs with hand-painted details, a black cord running along the contour of the piece and is totally different from the regular square design, in addition to presenting harmonious colors. The result is a sophisticated 1.8m-long piece of furniture that can cost BRL 7,293.

Inspiration

Not only fabrics are influenced by patchwork in interior design. Now tiles are also inspired by the technique, offering unique options. A color kit created by graphic designer Carina Canavesi  has different colors, designs, flower and geometrical prints and is sold per square meter (which is equivalent to 50 tiles) at the price of BRL 470 each. A great option for exclusive tiling.

It looks like a painting

Customization is currently the order of the day. If you visit 5 recently decorated homes, four of them will certainly have at least an item that is a reflection of the owner's personality. With an eye at that market share, CINEX, based in Bento Gonçalves (RS),  has released Cinex Stampa, which basically entails printing an image of the customer’s choice directly onto glass.

The company, using an Italian printing machine that applies paint with nanotechnology (minimal particles), offers prints from celebrated artists such as Heloísa Crocco, Paulo von Poser, Cláudio Novaes, but can also print whatever image the client requests.  The piece may be used to divide spaces, in closet and cabinet doors and also in bedroom halls. Prices range according to the size of the glass and the print chosen.

Time tunnel

The art of restoring old pieces of furniture is mastered by few. In this select group, some artists are very successful. Interior designer Karina Vargas Arruda has a passion for finding old furniture and turning it into exclusive pieces. The timeline includes furniture from the 1920s to the 1980s: sofas, closets, dressing tables, chairs, tables, sideboards, all of which have vibrant colors and a retro look. When combined with modern furniture, the pieces make very charming decorations. Prices start at BRL 700.
